How much does the exam cost?

The exam fee is currently $15 (as of 2026). Some volunteer examiner teams may charge slightly different amounts.

How long should I study?

Most people study for 2-4 weeks, spending a few hours per week. Some dedicated students pass after just a few days of intensive study!

What do I need to bring to the exam?

Bring a valid photo ID, the exam fee (usually cash or check), a pen or pencil, and a simple calculator (if desired). No internet-connected devices allowed during the exam.

How long is the license valid?

Amateur radio licenses are valid for 10 years and can be renewed at no cost.

Can kids get a ham radio license?

Yes! There's no age limit. Many children pass the exam and become licensed amateur radio operators.

What can I do with a Technician license?

You can operate on all amateur radio frequencies above 30 MHz, including popular 2-meter and 70-centimeter bands. You can talk locally on repeaters, communicate via satellites, use digital modes, and much more!
